Do I Need To Fertilize?

CLUES YOU NEED TO FERTILIZE:  If the growth of established ground covers is sluggish and they show the following symptoms, they probably need fertilizer.  If you're not sure, ask your lawn service provider.  If you don't have one, get one here

NITROGEN: Nitrogen-deficient ground covers have pale greenish-yellow leaves and stunted growth. Signs of nitrogen deficiency usually appear first in older leaves, which are the lowest leaves on the plant or its stems.

PHOSPHORUS: A phosphorus-deficient ground cover will be slow-growing and stunted, and its leaves may be dark green or purplish in color.

POTASSIUM: Potassium-deficient ground covers are spindly and poorly developed; taller-growing ground covers may fall over. Deficient plants are susceptible to leaf and stem diseases. Though rare, severe potassium deficiencies cause leaves to curl and brown around the edges starting at the tip. Symptoms usually begin with the leaves lowest on the plant stem and move up. IRON: Iron-deficient plants become chlorotic, with all of the leaf except its veins turning yellow. Symptoms start at leaf edges and usually affect new leaves first.   Learn all about fertilizer and view instructional video:  go»

ALL ABOUT FERTILIZER Fertilize mature or established ground covers with a product containing nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in a ratio of 1:1:1 or 1:2:1. For example, this 5-10-5 fertilizer is a perfect choice--1:2:1. Fertilizers are available in a wide, and often confusing, array of choices. They come in many forms-organic and synthetic, fast- release and slow-release, dry and liquid. Each type has advantages and disadvantages, and some types are more appropriate in certain situations than in others. Because ground covers hug the soil, fertilizing them is trickier than other, more upright and freestanding plants like trees and bushes. You'll need to apply fertilizer over the top of ground cover plants rather than directly to the soil at their bases. For that reason, choose a fertilizer that will not burn the foliage. The best fertilizers for ground covers come in small granules or liquid form. These products will work their way through or be directly absorbed by the foliage, so plenty of nutrients reach the plants. Whether you choose an organic or a synthetic fertilizer is a matter of personal taste.  more»

Watering your Lawn and Ground Covers.

Have a local installer put in an in-ground sprinkling system:  Sprinkler Install

7 most important watering tips:

  1. Too much water can be as bad as not enough water.

  2. Determine your exact watering needs--1" to 1.5" per week is typical.

  3. Place an empty can in the yard to see how much water you're actually sprinkling.

  4. Too much water can result in crab grass.

  5. Frequent shallow sprinkling also can result in weeds.

  6. Water in the early morning--not at night, NEVER during the day.

  7. Use a watering timer

WATERING All ground covers, even drought-tolerant ones, need an occasional sprinkling. How much they need depends on plant type, root depth, climate, and soil conditions. When first planted, ground cover beds require light, frequent irrigation because they depend on the water supply in the immediate vicinity of their small root systems. At this stage of growth, the soil should be kept constantly moist so that the plants don’t wilt. Once the plants are established and their root systems cover more area, you can water less. Unless you live in an arid region or the plants require high levels of moisture, irrigate only when the plants begin to wilt or show signs of stress. continue»

The Garden Greenhouse can be a home away from home in your back yard!

Local greenhouse installers in your area::

GREENHOUSES   Monday 6-15-2010.  In a climate where killing cold is a reality of winter, a green house broadens the scope of gardening, making it possible to  overwinter tender perennials —and even tropical plants—and to get a head start in spring with seedlings and cuttings.

If designed to do so, a greenhouse can also double as a conservatory The heated greenhouse shown opposite, top, is furnished with a table and chairs in summer. Most of the plants are taken outside when the weather warms, so there is plenty of room to sit, and the family has a glassed-in space with a broad view of the garden.

There are three kinds of greenhouses: cold, cool, and warm. A cold greenhouse is heated only
by the sun. Though unsuitable for tropical plants, it provides protection for plants that are
borderline hardy and it extends the growing season in spring and autumn. A cool greenhouse is heated, keeping the ambient temperature above 45°F—warm enough to overwinter frost-tender plants. A "hothouse", used for growing tropicals, must he kept above 55°P at all times.  continue reading:

Fences Security, privacy, beauty or all three.

▪Wooden fence Installers in your home town!

▪Steel fence Installers in your home town!

Fences and Screening:  Monday 6-7-2010.  Fences and outdoor screens can trans form a garden into a secure, attractive retreat from the outside world. When well designed, they filter the sun’s glare, turn a biting wind into a pleasant breeze, and help to muffle the cacophony of street traffic, noisy neighbors, and barking dogs. As partitions, they divide the yard into separate areas for recreation, relaxation, gardening, and storage. Fences serve many of the same purposes as walls, but fences are generally less formal and imposing in appearance, easier to construct, and, when you calculate labor costs, less expensive.

Most fences are built partly or entirely of wood. The versatility of wood as a fencing material is reflected in the wide variety of its forms—split rails, grape stakes, dimension lumber, poles, and manufactured wood products such as plywood and tempered hardboard. Though the design possibilities are endless, wooden fences fall into one of three basic types: post-and-rail, picket, and solid board. The one you choose may depend on the function the fence is to serve; a board fence may be the best choice for a full privacy screen, for example. Fences can also be designed to edit views with the inclusion of louvers, slats, lattice, or see-through trellises that provide a glimpse of what lies beyond. continue reading:

Landscape with structures.

Decks  Monday 5-17-2010:  A deck sets the stage for outdoor activity and extends the total living space of a house. A properly planned deck forms a focal point in the landscape, redefines grade, and provides new views of the garden and its surroundings. Built to accommodate seating, tables, or a hot tub, a deck can function as an outdoor room. Decks can abut the house or tuck into a remote corner of the garden. The classic attached deck is typically accessed from the house through French or sliding doors from a living room, kitchen, or master bedroom-or all three. So when planning your deck, keep in mind interior traffic patterns as well as outdoor ones. Do I need a deck or a patio? Your site or the style of your house can be determining factors. A deck can bridge bumps and slopes or "float" over swampy low spots that might sink a brick patio. Decking lumber is resilient underfoot, and it doesn't store heat the way masonry can, making a deck cooler in hot areas. A low-level deck can link house and garden at flower height, offering a new perspective on garden beds. Such a deck makes a good replacement for an existing concrete slab-you can often use the slab as a base for the deck. A low-level wraparound deck links interior spaces with a series of boardwalks or landings. continue reading»

The Garden Trellis Monday 5-24-2010:  An easy and attractive way to support twining and vining plants is with handcrafted trellises, available from garden retailers and mail-order suppliers. Some sources carry an impressive array of trellises, ranging from hand-forged metal to woven willow, that can serve as decorative elements as well as plant supports. Woven wooden or vine trellises bring a casual or rustic touch to the garden, while the architectural wooden and metal ones generally look more formal. full article:
